  10. STAT is a set of data-manipulation and analysis programs developed at   
  11. the University of California, San Diego, and at the Wang Institute of   
  12. Graduate Studies.  They were designed under the UNIX philosophy that    
  13. says individual programs should be designed as tools to do one task well
  14. and produce output suitable for input to other programs.                
  15.                                                                         
  16. There are two sets of STAT programs: data manipulation and data         
  17. analysis.  The data manipulation programs are general utilities that    
  18. cooperate with other programs.  The data analysis programs compute the  
  19. most widely-used descriptive and inferential statistics.  Although these
  20. are independent programs, the output from one program can be used as    
  21. input to another.  A solid knowledge of statistics and computers is     
  22. assumed.
